Essie: Shake Your $$ Maker

Essie Neon Collection: Shake Your $$ Maker

 Image

Essie is one of my favourite nail polish makers- not necessarily because of the formula (sometimes the colours are too sheer or the polish chips and peels off my nails too quickly. The latter is more to do with my nails, than this particular brand). I love Essie because of the colour range. The subtle shifts in the pinks, neutrals and red, the beautiful hues of blue and purple, and then awesome bright fun and on trend colours; all of them really speak to me. Actually, they call my name. I can’t resist. It doesn’t matter that I have more bottles in my collection than a girl should reasonably have, I must have that new colour!

So when my eye caught this little beauty I knew I had to have it. It also helped that with my Priceline rewards voucher I got a $4 off Essie perk, AND they had 40% off all beauty so I got this for a STEAL.

I have been hunting for a green, which can be a tricky colour to wear on your nails. I think Essie have really gotten the tone (cool) right on this one, and it is more of a blue green than yellow, which helps it look chic on the nails, I think. It did take four coats to get the colour as opaque as I wanted it – this is a bit sheer and a tiny bit streaky. It also has a very matte finish, which is really cool and of course the brush, which Essie do brilliantly, is excellent.

I also tried a different top coat on it from L’Oreal, and I really like the effect. But this is definitely a colour I will be getting a lot of wear out for the coming months, as I really need a break from blue and red.

Navy Eyeliner

Navy Eyeliner.

One of my favourite summer looks is navy eyeliner with a neutral toned eyeshadow and barely there mascara. I love navy in the summertime! It might not be the look of ‘the moment’ but I find it really classic, cool and chic.

My current favourites are Guerlain Liquid Eyeliner in 02 Bleu and Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner in Navy Blue.

The Guerlain is a lovely deep and classic navy. The bottle is a beauty to behold, and reminds me of some kind of Persian treasure, with its long slim gold lid over a reassuringly heavy matte glass pot. The bush is firm enough to give a nice clean line without too much expertise needed from the person wielding it. The eyeliner itself is opaque and applies perfectly with one swipe – no need to go back and fill in the weird sheer places you get with some other liquid eyeliners. I mainly wear this with MAC Paint Pot in Camel Coat during the day, just to the end of my eyelid, and maybe at night with a tiny feline flick at the ends.

The SmashBox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner is a much more modern take on the idea of navy – or is it a call back to the eighties? Either way, I absolutely love it. To be completely honest with you, for a long time I didn’t wear it as an eyeliner at all, but rather as a cream eyeshadow to funk up an outfit when I was going out. And it works perfectly like that too! I apply this with my Real Techniques eyeliner brush, and the thing I really love about this product is that it’s really build-able. I can have quite a sheer electric blue look going on along my lash line, or build it to be that dark navy look. Either way, it’s very nice. The colour itself is a little more iridescent than the Guerlain, far lighter in colour and closer to royal blue than true navy. I live in fear of the day it starts to dry out, as I have no idea how to re-moisten these things!

Next on my navy list is the Clinique Quickliner Intense in Midnight.

Have you tried navy eyeliner? What ones do you love?

Skincare focus- Antipodes

I only have three Antipodes skin care products, but I love them so much. I can’t wait to add more. I have dry to normal skin which gets dehydrated easily – some evenings when I am applying my serum and oil, I swear I can feel my skin sucking up all the moisture. So I don’t know how these products perform for other skin types, but I highly recommend them if you have skin like mine.

Also, I love this brand as their ingredients are very gentle, few extra chemically bits, and just feel… lovely.

The Antipodes Hosanna H20 Intensive Skin Plumping Serum is a water based and cloudy product that smells divine. It’s very thin in texture. Some other serums I apply to my face and I feel like I don’t need any moisturizer or oil, as it’s rich enough for me. Not with this one, though that’s not a bad thing.

I find this serum really hydrating, as it says on the tin, and it’s taken me a bit to figure out how much to use. I definitely need moisturizer after it, but it sinks in so nicely and doesn’t leave any kind of residue on my skin, which in the summer months I really, really appreciate.

The Apostle Skin Brightening Tone Correcting Serum again, smells divine and is another water based serum. I use this every other night. I totally noticed a difference when I first started using this serum; in the first week after I bought it I used it every single night and my skin tone evened out quite a bit. Things just seemed brighter. And then I accidentally got a lot of sun… so I had to have a break from it.

Again, I like that it is very thin in texture, so I am not immediately sweating it out in this godforsaken Australian summer.  I will definitely be re buying these two beauties. They are also certified Oragnic, which is a big bonus in my book when they work so well.

Aura Manuka Honey Mask– I have only used this a couple of times, but I look forward to using it each week. I usually save it for a Sunday, when my skin has typically had makeup on it for two days if I have been out and about. This is the first cleansing mask I have owned in a super long time- I didn’t really use masks in my 20s, and for the last two years I have only been using the Origins Drink Up Intensive. I guess I haven’t used cleansing masks because my skin is pretty clear – it gets a little congested around my nose but I don’t really get pimples etc.

All that said I really enjoy using this. My skin is clearer – it doesn’t totally sort out that area around my nostrils, but to a certain point it does – and it hydrates really nicely. It’s very comfortable to have on while I do other things- washing up or painting my nails, and it works well on my sensitive skin. Love it!

I highly recommend these specific products, but I have a feeling I will fall in love with the whole range. I do wish they were a little more accessible, but hey, what can you do?

There are a few things on my Antipodes wish list – the eye cream, the avocado night cream and more… but what about you? What do you use/like in the Antipodes range?

Face of the day- without the face.

On my face today-
Antipodes Hosanna Serum. OMG I adore this serum. It’s so light and perfect for hot summer days, yet hydrating enough to make my dehydrated face happy.
Neutrogena sunscreen- I can’t remember the actual name and for the life of me I can’t find the bottle! It’s the dry touch 50spf stuff anyway. But it’s one of my favourites. I’ve been putting it on a good 20 minutes before doing the rest of my makeup, and I have breakfast and clean my teeth. This allows it to dry and stop being greasy before I put my foundation on. Back to loving this baby full time!

Foundation : Revlon Nearly Naked liquid and powder. I love the liquid big time, but my skin has recently darkened ever so slightly from all the time I’ve spent on the beach over the summer, an it’s slightly too pink for me right now. However I do adore the formulation- light and the perfect coverage for when my skin is fairly good. Like the perfect TM. The powder really helps it set over the sunscreen.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla. My all time favourite concealer but again a little too pink for me right now. I need custard too. But… The perfect formulation.
Clinique Chubby Stick For Eyes in Lotta Latte. The ideal bronze colour- in the cooler tone than something like the Maybelline Bad to the Bronze. It’s perfect for my pale skin. I swipe a few lines over my lid and then blend it with my finger. I have some other Chubby Sticks for eyes and I adore them. Stop testing on animals please Clinique!
Smashbox Gel Liner in Navy. This is more electric blue than navy but I love the colour for summer. It enough contrast to make my brown eyes stand out. Perfectly applied with the Real Techniques Liner Brush. Adore. Contrasts with Lotta Latte to perfection.
Guerlian Cils D’Efner. Best. Mascara. Ever. Seriously. Perfect packaging, perfect formulation, perfect length and volume. I will never be without this and if you haven’t tried this, you should.
NARS blush in Desire. Ballerina blush in a sublime form. Only had this for a few days and I love it.
TheBalm Mary Lou Manizer – soft, creamy, applies and blends like a dream. Stands out nicely when you want the highlighter to stand out but isn’t too obvious. Gives you a light workout glow. I bought a second one to give to my sister I love it so bad.
Bobbi Brown Sheer Lipstick in Rosy. I’ve overused this word in this post, but seriously I love this lipstick hard. So hard. Perfect.

In search of the 30-something year old blog…

So I have a massive guilty pleasure in watching beauty blog videos on YouTube. Well, it’s not even that much of a guilty pleasure, I really enjoy watching them. But it seems to be impossible to find many you tubers who are over the age of 30. There are probably a few out there, so if you know of any, let me know! I have stumbled across Goss and the Pixiwoo girls, although I am not too sure how old the Pixiwoo girls are. But my other favourites, particularly Vivianna Does Makeup and Essie Button, and the legions of their followers, all seem a bit young. And I want makeup and skin care recc’s for my skin, at my age. Of course, there is the amazing Sali Hughes, but again, not really a you tube gal. I highly recommend her site, www.salihughesbeauty.com and the videos she does on there are great.

I am kind of crossing my own point here, aren’t I?

Although I love talking beauty, I don’t have too many friends with the same interests. I just wrote a letter to a dear friend who is going to the hallowed beauty halls of Myer in George St for the first time, so I wrote a whole lot of guidance style information, and I really enjoyed it. Maybe I will write little mini reviews here. I am not the kind of person to be making you tube videos anyway, I hate the sound of my voice and I don’t really need to add any of the internet vitriol into my own life – I am happy and at peace, and I like it that way, thank you very much. But I am in search…

So what do 30 something blogs look like? I guess they don’t only focus on beauty because there is supposed to be more to life at that point? I don’t know; family, marriage, a home, a career and other interests, reading, swimming etc. Beauty sits right up there with those for me. And I won’t apologize for it! So I would like to see more! Chatty, direct, no BS vlogs. Is that too much to ask?
