A Holy Grail Face Powder.

A Holy Grail Face Powder MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder

I’m not the first person, and I certainly won’t be the last, to rave about MAC Prep and Prime Transparent Finishing Powder. Oh, my. I haven’t ever really been a face powder girl, but my skin has been changing a little recently, and I have found that makeup isn’t enjoying hanging about on my nose and chin as much as it used to. My sister told me about this… and while it isn’t a fixing powder per se, it does exactly what I need it to do.

The powder is very, very very, like SUPER finely milled. So fine. This means it applies like a dream. I swirl it on my face as the woman on the counter showed me; rather than sweeping it on, I kind of twirl the brush a little in my fingers and I move it up and down my nose and chin.

The Transparent Finishing Powder leaves my skin looking soft and velvety and makes my foundation really last. It’s not too mattifying, it has more of a velvety effect and I haven’t seen any evidence of it caking anywhere; as a matter of fact I wore it over my Estee Lauder Double Wear which usually cakes on my something chronic, and I got no caking with this over the top. WINNING (oops, that’s not a thing anymore, is it?).

I don’t always totally finish with this, I usually sweep the Bobbi Brown finishing powder lightly over this, but I am totally, totally sold on this powder. I love it. Next time I am at a MAC counter I am going to look at a few more in this line of Prep + Prime.

Budget Friendly Eyebrow Products

Budget Friendly Eyebrow Products

When Sali Hughes makes a budget product recommendation, I will usually rush out to buy it staright away. No shame there! So when she recently said she liked the Sleek Eyebrow Stylist I jumped on the sleek website and ordered two.

I have been looking for a new eyebrow product for a while. I have been using the MUA Pro Brow kit for a while, and while I really like it, I wanted to try a pencil-type product- but most of them come with a really high price tag! This was the perfect solution to trying a new product without worrying if it didn’t work out for me.

I ordered the Light and the Medium colours – even though I have very dark hair, my eyebrows quite sparse and my hair is very fine, and I don’t really like the ‘super drawn on’ eyebrow look; just a little extra definition and filling in the gaps is all I am after.

The Sleek Eyebrow Stylist comes with a waxy pencil nib that is triangular in shape, and on the other end a spooly to brush and groom the brows into place. I brush the spooly through before and after applying the product, as I feel it gives me that more natural look. I’ve mainly been playing with the medium colour, and I love the shape of the nib. It allows me to create very fine lines in the thinner parts of my brows, and fill in and define with the thicker parts… but it does take some practice. I am very glad I didn’t go darker, but again, that’s my personal taste of that more natural every day look. I am dying to get to a NARS counter and have a girl do massive statement brows on me one day. Just for fun!

Having been an eye brow powder girl for so long it is taking a little bit of getting used to. Brows definitely take longer with a pencil that with powder and a brush, but I am enjoying the change. It also lasts much longer than the powder does!

The Sleek Eyebrow Stylist retails for $8.99 US.

L’Oreal Color Riche Le Crayon De Couleur

L’Oreal Color Riche Eye Colour Pencil

I haven’t heard much about these, and haven’t spied anyone discussing them on one of my favourite beauty forums (Sali Hughes Beauty), but when I saw these in the L’Oreal stand I knew I had to have at least one. And while the product is described as a pencil, it is more of an eyeshadow crayon for sure. It really reminds me of the Bobbi Brown creamy eyeshadow sticks, but with more staying power.

I bought 03 Smokey Taupe. I really like this eye shadow stick crayon, thing. I really do. It applies like a dream, very smoothly, and you have a little bit of time to play and smudge it out if you want, before it dries, and sticks. It really sticks. This Eye Colour Pencil will not budge. The stick itself has a much finer point on it than the Clinique Chubby Sticks for Eyes, but has a very similar application and feel to it – a very dry creamy feel. The smokey eye look is so easily achieved with this little beauty, and the colour range is stunning- a few more neutral, subdued tones than you find in some other ranges.

ONLY MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT; I can’t figure out how to ‘sharpen’ it. It’s in a plastic tube and the bottom doesn’t twist. Any ideas are greatly welcomed!

NARS Blush

NARS Blush

Ah, Blush. The best of the beauty world (don’t worry lipstick and mascara, I still love you too!). I love blush. I find it can really change your appearance. It can make you look healthy and happy, and give you a sense of confidence when you’re not feeling so great or are struggling with your skin that day. As a pretty pale skinned girl, I can look almost ghostly, and people will not hesitate to tell me that I look unwell (nice!) if I skip the blush. But let’s be real. I wear blush for me. I like achieving different effects with different blush. And one of my all time favourite brands for blush, is NARS.

I own three shades at the moment. I say at the moment because I have my eye on two more (at least). I find NARS blushes to be really easy to apply- the formula isn’t too soft, and while some shades are more pigmented than others, I find it hard to over do blush with NARS, unlike some other brands.

Orgasm is the cult favourite, and I can see why. I tired numerous different cheaper ‘dupes’ but don’t be fooled ladies (and gents) – there really isn’t a proper dupe for this shade. I don’t think its just the shade – it’s the way it applies. Now I know some people find it far too gold, and at times I can see that, but to be honest it doesn’t bother me. I can’t imagine my makeup drawer without this beauty, and the dupes I bought have been ceremoniously dumped from my stash.

Deep Throat is the other well known shade from NARS and honestly this is such a favourite for me. For a while I went off shimmer blushes and stopped wearing this, but I have started reaching for it, and reach for it most days. I love the tone on my skin – it’s the perfect blush for a bold lip colour, and it builds really nicely if you want to wear no lip colour. The shade is perfect for my pale skin, and again, it’s a blush I find I can’t really over do.

Finally I have Desire. Desire is a cool tones bright pink blush… and oh, my goodness, I love it. It’s a little more powdery than the other two formulas and is a matte blush. When I wear this blush I find my eyes look brighter and my whole complexion looks brighter. I wear it with my bright fuchsia coloured lipsticks, champagne coloured eyeshadow and lashings of mascara. I love this blush – as scary as it looks in the pan, it works so well on my face, and I can see it working on a range of skin tones.

Next I have my eye on Oasis and Luster.

Do you have any NARS blushes? Which ones are your favourites?

Navy Eyeliner

Navy Eyeliner.

One of my favourite summer looks is navy eyeliner with a neutral toned eyeshadow and barely there mascara. I love navy in the summertime! It might not be the look of ‘the moment’ but I find it really classic, cool and chic.

My current favourites are Guerlain Liquid Eyeliner in 02 Bleu and Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner in Navy Blue.

The Guerlain is a lovely deep and classic navy. The bottle is a beauty to behold, and reminds me of some kind of Persian treasure, with its long slim gold lid over a reassuringly heavy matte glass pot. The bush is firm enough to give a nice clean line without too much expertise needed from the person wielding it. The eyeliner itself is opaque and applies perfectly with one swipe – no need to go back and fill in the weird sheer places you get with some other liquid eyeliners. I mainly wear this with MAC Paint Pot in Camel Coat during the day, just to the end of my eyelid, and maybe at night with a tiny feline flick at the ends.

The SmashBox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner is a much more modern take on the idea of navy – or is it a call back to the eighties? Either way, I absolutely love it. To be completely honest with you, for a long time I didn’t wear it as an eyeliner at all, but rather as a cream eyeshadow to funk up an outfit when I was going out. And it works perfectly like that too! I apply this with my Real Techniques eyeliner brush, and the thing I really love about this product is that it’s really build-able. I can have quite a sheer electric blue look going on along my lash line, or build it to be that dark navy look. Either way, it’s very nice. The colour itself is a little more iridescent than the Guerlain, far lighter in colour and closer to royal blue than true navy. I live in fear of the day it starts to dry out, as I have no idea how to re-moisten these things!

Next on my navy list is the Clinique Quickliner Intense in Midnight.

Have you tried navy eyeliner? What ones do you love?

What’s In My Bag?

What’s in my bag?

ImageImage

When I first saw these posts on YouTube and on blogs I was a bit WTF. I didn’t really see the interest. But I have since been converted. I think I have read just about every single one out there, and definitely watched most of them in the YouTube world. So here is my shabby little contribution. I don’t do fancy handbags, I like something very functional and colourful, and I try not to carry too much around with me, as if my shoulders are unevenly weighted, my back goes out. SEXY!

 Image

  1. Bag. I spotted this randomly online and mentioned it in passing to my OH who promptly hunted it down and gave it to me for my birthday last year. I don’t think I have stopped using it since. I love the colour, the size and the way I can wear the strap across my body. The size means I can’t cram too much in there, and that I clean it out often, although having looked at it for this, it definitely needs a wash of some sort.
  2. Headphones/ iPhone/iPod. I am using my iPhone, which works as my iPod to take the photo, so the headphones represent all three. Can be without the phone part, can’t be without my ipod part and headphones.
  3. Black comb. The joys of having a fringe in humid weather!
  4. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer suncream. Never without it.
  5. House key ring- A friend gave me this, proper tiny converse keyring. I wore blue sparkly cons on my wedding day, so she gave me this as a reminder. Love it – makes finding my key very easy.
  6. Car key – key ring. A tardis. Love it.
  7. New york notebook. Looking a little worse for wear. Even though I write most of my notes in my phone, I find writing down things I really want to consider by hand much more beneficial than typing with my thumbs.
  8. Peter Morrisey black leather wallet. I worked in a supermarket for years and years, and when I left, the owner gave me this. I love it. It just stays shut, no matter how much I put in it, without having a press stud or magnetic button to close it.
  9. Old Sportsgirl sunglasses case with el cheapo specsaver sunglasses and Tommy Hilfiger glasses. I wear glasses all the time, and my eyes are super light sensitive (for migraines) so I can never be without the two of these. Just ordered a new pair of prescription sunglasses, so I can’t wait for them to arrive.
  10. All my hairties and three bobby pins.
  11. Naprogesic. I was wondering where this had gotten to!
  12. Three pens. Can’t be without a pen. Makes me panic if I don’t have one with me.
  13. Blood donor badge, from The Red Cross. Two pairs of earrings –  I feel undressed without earrings on. These are emergency pairs for those days fear strikes me in the heart when I am halfway to work and realise I have no earrings on. Saviours.
  14. Work keys on someone elses Teacher’s Credit Union lanyard. Really need a new lanyard.
  15. Glasses gleaning cloth.
  16. Chanel mirror. Always with me. Love it.
  17. Burts Bees Red Dahlia lip balm, Urban Decay Revolution lipstick in Anarchy and Bobbi Brown Lipstick in Mod Pink.
  18. Panadol- despise nasty headaches!

I usually have a very tiny bottle of perfume with me too… but the hot weather has made me reluctant to carry it around, in case my bag is in the sun and it wrecks the perfume.

It’s quite boring really. Because I drive to work, and it’s only a short drive, I don’t carry an e-reader, book or laptop/ipad with me. Keeps things light and nice!

So come on, show us yours!

Top Five Pink Lipsticks

It’s hard starting out as a blogger who wants to talk about beauty. I want to talk about everything, I am scared of talking about things out of season as most of the world seems dominated by the northern hemisphere and their seasonal patters, and I am worried that I am not talking about new releases. But as a beauty shopper and as a person who scours the net for information on what I want to buy which isn’t always what’s new I thought I better start with the reviews I look for online. So. Let’s get started!a

PINK LIPSTICKS!

It’s the last summer month here in Australia, perfect time for pink lips, and I have only just started buying pink lipsticks in the last few months.

I have picked five here , and I love all of these so, so bad; I have written about them in the order they appear in the photos and swatches.

Image

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Anarchy. A friend sent me this recently from Canada. Oh. My. I love everything about this lipstick. I have been coveting them since Sali Hughes talked about them on her beauty website, but because they’re not readily available in Australia, I was worried about buying it without trying it out!

So it was love at first sight with this beauty. The packaging is really unique and very beautiful – I love the metallic feel of it, with the warped little lines down the dies. The lipstick itself is a perfect cool toned fuchsia, a colour I have recently become obsessed with, and the formula is creamy and opaque. It wears really well on me, even with eating and drinking it wears off evenly, not leaving me with a weird line out the outside of my lips. I love this, and I will soon have more colours. ALL THE COLOURS!

. This is the first proper pink I ever owned, and I love it. I wear it every day. It is a warmer tone than I normally prefer in a lipstick, but it works perfectly with Nars Orgasm on my cheeks and it gives colour without being too obvious and not too subtle. Love.

Lord & Berry Lipstick Crayon in Vintage Pink. I bought this when I saw Lisa Elderidge wear it in a video. I love the colour, but it is definitely more of a winter pink- It is very pale, the texture is quite creamy for a crayon style and because its in the pencil look it’s easy to apply without a mirror. Again, it wears really well, and I think it would look amazing on people with darker skin than me –especially coffee, creamy skin tones.

Rimmel Moisture Renewal Lipstick in Oxford Street Fuschi. After Anarchy this is the most fun lipstick I own. I wear it with really dark smoky eyes and basically nothing else. I love it’s neon quality, although its not quite neon, and it’s that cooler tone I prefer. I love the formula of the Rimmel Moisture Renewal range, and am planning on buying Wild about Ginger.. well all of them really. And for that price, you can’t go wrong!

Bobbi Brown Sheer Lipstick in Rosy. I have said this about every colour here, and I guess that’s why it’s a post about favourite pinks, but I do really love this colour. It’s more of a red pink than any of the others, and while it’s a sheer formula, it is very buildable. I think this is the most versatile of all the colours I have listed here, as it works really well as a stain, a sheer-ed out colour or built up to be really bold. If Bobbi Brown didn’t test on animals, I would be buying a whole lot more of these, but sadly… that’s the way things are right now!
